    Ann Litt, MS, RD, LD
2008 Outstanding Nutrition Entrepreneur Award Winner

The late Ann Litt, MS, RD, LD, of Washington, DC is the 2008 Outstanding Nutrition Entrepreneur of the Year. The Nutrition Entrepreneurs (NE) Dietetic Practice Group will honor Ann posthumously at the annual American Dietetic Association Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo in Chicago, Illinois. Ann’s outstanding achievements will be recognized at the NE pre-FNCE workshop on October 25, 2008. Ann’s husband, Dan Litt, and their two sons are hoping to attend to accept the commemorative plaque and $1000 check which accompany this honor.

Ann was dedicated to the field of dietetics and was considered a pioneer for starting her own private practice during a time when few dietitians branched out on their own. Ann was a true mentor who enjoyed sharing her experiences and expertise. She was known for having traveled the country to teach dietitians the basics of starting a private practice. Countless high school seniors, dietetic interns, college students, recent graduates, and dietitians are indebted to Ann for her guidance and leadership.

With over 25 years of entrepreneurial experience, Ann built an impressive resume and client list. She consulted to the White House Athletic Center and members of the Washington Bullets professional basketball team. She created “A Pound of Prevention: Helping Children Develop a Healthy Relationship to Food and their Bodies,” an eating disorders prevention program, that was presented to schools and organizations in the DC Metro Area. She worked on many media campaigns including the “Got Milk?” campaign. She was the dietitian for the Washington Redskins, a consultant to Sodexho Campus Services, and the Nutrition Advisor for CosmoGirl’s Body and Soul challenge. Ann also shared her nutrition enterprise by contributing to articles and television segments for media outlets such as the Washington Post and local television affiliates for NBC, CBS, and ABC.

Ann was also an author. She wrote three books: American Dietetic Association’s Guide to Private Practice (co-authored), The College Student’s Guide to Eating Well on Campus, and Fuel for Young Athletes. She co-produced the Be Your Own Boss Starter Kit, which contained a collection of camera-ready forms designed for dietitians new to private practice. Ann’s publications are well received and have sold successfully and led to many speaking opportunities for her.

Throughout her career, Ann volunteered endlessly to the dietetics profession. Ann received the Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year Award. She served on the Executive Committee of NE for many years in a variety of positions, including Chair. She held many leadership positions within the DC Dietetic Association and was an active member of SCAN. She served as chairperson of the Task Force on Licensing and Credentialing and was instrumental in the successful pursuit of licensure in DC. Ann was appointed to the first Board of Dietetic Practice in the state of Maryland and served as the professional issues delegate to the House of Delegates and a member of the advisory board to Syracuse University.

The NE Dietetic Practice Group would like to celebrate all of Ann’s amazing accomplishments by awarding her the 2008 Outstanding Nutrition Entrepreneur of the Year Award. She was truly a pioneer in our field and is greatly missed.
